Danny Wilson made two changes to the line-up with Tope Odabeyi and Alex Revell replacing Anthony McNamee and Billy Paynter. Town were dealt a pre-match blow with goalkeeper David Lucas sustaining a knee injury in the warm-up, meaning he was replaced by Phil Smith for his first start of the season. Jakuk Jesionkowski was summoned to the bench for his first involvement in a Robin's game.

Colchester's Anthony Wordsworth was the first player to be cautioned after pulling back Kevin Amankwaah as the defender attempted to latch onto a through ball from the inventive Simon Ferry.

Town kept up their attacking intent with Greer, Jean-Francois and McGovern all putting excellent crosses in for the likes of Hutchinson and Revell.

Phil Smith made an excellent stop to deny The U's former Cheltenham player Ashley Vincent who had pounced on a loose ball on the edge of the box. Alex Revell then tried his luck from 22 yards but his looping effort dropped onto the roof of the net.

New Colchester boss Aidy Boothroyd didn't have to wait long to see his side score their first goal under his tenure as Ashley Vincent opened the scoring. Vincent raced into the area and got on the end of a through ball to lift the ball over the onrushing Smith and into the back of the net. The goalscorer was replaced by Jamie Guy shortly after the goal after being injured in the process of finding the net.

Ben Hutchinson produced a neat turn just after the half-hour mark to lose his marked inside the box but could only blast over with visiting stopper Ben Williams able to watch the ball sail over his bar.

Alex Revell challenges

Quick-thinking from Lecsinel Jean-Francois from a free-kick saw Town earn the first of two consecutive corners five minutes before the break but once again The Robins were unable to work the U's keeper. Williams was tested moments later after a fine cut back from Amankwaah but Jon-Paul McGovern was foiled by a superb stop from the stopper from eight yards out.

Matt Heath did well to deny Town their second real opening before the break as he turned a cross from Obadeyi behind for a corner in front of his own goal.

Tope Obadeyi got Town back on level terms after collecting a through ball from Ben Hutchinson. The Robins broke from a corner with Hutchinson making ground through the middle before playing Obadeyi through - who produced an emphatic finish to make it all-square.

Half-Time: Swindon Town 1 Colchester United 1

There were no changes to the Swindon side at the break with Town emerging for the second period looking to build on what had been a strong finish to the first period.

Alex Revelled produced a speculative 40 yard strike which cannoned off the cross bar with Williams able to pluck the ball out of the air having been beaten by the first attempt. Kevin Lisbie was then denied at the other end by another fine save from Smith at the other end. A superb interchange of midfield play involving Ferry and Douglas saw the latter just fail to get on the end of a through ball with Williams able to gather.

Danny Wilson made his first change of the afternoon on 62 minutes with Anthony McNamee coming into the action in place of Ben Hutchinson. Simon Ferry should have put Town ahead minutes later after being played through by McNamee, but after turning inside the box, lifted his left foot effort wide.

Jonathan Douglas

Billy Paynter joined the action with eighteen minutes remaining as he replaced Alex Revell who had enjoyed a fine start to his Town career. Paynter almost made his presence felt immediately as he sidefooted a McGovern corner into the arms of Williams.

Simon Ferry was then replaced by Michael Timlin with The Robins looking to make the most of the remaining nine minutes of play with an injection of fresh legs in the middle of the park.

Simon Hackney could have handed his side all three points with an 86th minute effort from inside the area after a slip from Greer, but thankfully for Town the ball sailed over.
