Report: Town 2 Carlisle United 0

Town earned another valuable three points against Carlisle United thanks to a goal either side of half time from Charlie Austin and Billy Paynter.

The hosts had taken the lead thanks to Charlie Austin's 13th goal of the season on 31 minutes.

Austin latched onto a superb defence splitting pass from Gordon Greer on the edge of the area, before curling the ball past the Carlisle keeper Adam Collin into the far corner and break what had been a fairly stubborn deadlock.

The visitors responded well to going behind, forcing David Lucas into a save from Ian Harte's curling free-kick, and Lucas was on hand again on the stoke of half-time to deny Joe Anyinsah with his right boot.

It was consequently no surprise when Billy Paynter made it two after 56 minutes, flicking a pinpoint Alan Sheehan free-kick into the far corner of the net, and subsequently engaging in a bizarre Sumo wrestling inspired celebration.

Town started the second half the stronger, with both Danny Ward and Jonathan Douglas forcing Collin into sharp saves early on.

Carlisle Manager Greg Abbott then threw caution to the wind, introducing Daryl Duffy and Marc Bridge-Wilkinson and moving to a 4-4-2 formation, but the damage was clearly already done and David Lucas was rarely tested in the closing stages of the match.

Craig Easton and Vincent Pericard were introduced and both slotted neatly into the line-up; Pericard having a shot cleared off the line against his former club.

Sean Morrison then replaced Gordon Greer at the heart of the defence, with the captain having gone down awkwardly in the six-yard box, having suffered what was later diagnosed as a minor injury.

The last 10 minutes were played out at a leisurely pace with both sides seemingly having settled for the result, from a game of which it became inreasingly clear there was only going to be one winner.

Town now move onto 56 points and remain in 5th place in the League One table.
