Town ran out 4-2 winners over Oldham Athletic this evening, following an uninspiring 90 minutes at The County Ground.
It was the visitors who started the match the stronger, but could only create half chances for strikers Pawel Abbott and Jason Price early on.
Town struggled to get into their stride in the first half, with a few passes going astray and in-form strikers Billy Paynter and Charlie Austin barely getting a sniff of goal in a turgid opening 45 minutes.
However, it was just as the half drew to a close that Town took the game by the scruff of the neck, with Paynter bagging a brace - first from a stunning 20-yard drive into the top corner, then from the penalty spot after Charlie Austin had been hauled down by Reuben Hazell.
The second half started slowly as had the first, but Town were 4-0 to the good within an hour, as both Charlie Austin and Danny Ward sprung the offside trap to race through and finish neatly to put the game beyond the visitors.
Danny Wilson took the opportunity to rest some of his players as the half went on, with J-P McGovern, Billy Paynter and Charlie Austin being replaced by Vincent Pericard, Craig Easton and Mark Marshall.
Two lapses in concentration from Town allowed Oldham to gain some respectability, as substitute Joe Colbeck stole in at the back post for the first, and Jason Price took advantage of a Phil Smith error to nod home the second.
In truth the game had begun to peter out soon after Ward had made it 4-0, but Wilson will be disappointed to have seen his side pegged back as the game drew to a close.
However, it was a vital win for a Town side who were far from their best throughout, and a perfect springboard for Saturday's promotion clash with Huddersfield Town.

79 - GOAL! The Latics score a consolation through substitute Joe Colbeck. A strike by Chris Taylor drifts across the face of goal with Colbeck on hand to fire the ball in from an acute 12-yard angle.
84 - Mark Marshall is introduced into the action, replacing two-goal front man Billy Paynter with Marshall taking his place alongside Pericard in the frontline.
