Murray Rues Lack Of Cutting Edge In Northampton Defeat

28 September 2016

Midfielder Sean Murray admitted that Town were the masters of their own downfall during their 3-1 defeat to Northampton Town on Tuesday evening.

The former Watford man was on the scoresheet as he hauled the hosts level at SN1, but second-half goals from John-Joe O’Toole and Kenji Gorre gave the Cobblers the three points after Harry Beautyman had opened the scoring early in the first-half.

And Murray was of the opinion that a lack of conviction in both penalty areas was to blame for the loss.

“We were just a bit sloppy with probably all three of the goals to be honest,” he told swindontownfc.co.uk.

“One of them was a set-piece and the one in the first-half we could have avoided, but other than that we played some great football in the second-half.

“We needed to put away a few more of our chances.

“When we got it back to 1-1 there were a few chances and we got the ball forward quite well.

“We are disappointed not to have built on that first goal.

“It is having that grit and determination not to concede a goal because, in this league especially, when you give someone a chance they are going to take it.

“We need to maybe improve on that a little bit.”

However, Murray was thrilled to have finally open his account for Town with a beautiful finish and is now aiming for more goals and assists as he looks to help push the Robins up the table.

“It is what I have been waiting for to get the first goal out of the way,” he added.

“Hopefully now I can push on because I’ve been trying for the last couple of weeks. Now it has finally come I think there will be many more.

“I just want to improve on goals and assists and helping the team win. We need to start winning games and pushing up the table, so goals and assists can help us improve.”

Finally, after missing the win away at Oldham last weekend with a bruised foot, Murray feels he is nearing full fitness.

“I missed the Oldham game because my foot was quite badly bruised and I just needed some time for that to heal,” he continued.

“But fitness wise I’ve played enough games now to know that I can complete 90 minutes comfortably, so I feel like I’m getting there.”
