Obika On The Hunt For Three Points Against Southend

1 January 2017

Jon Obika is well aware of the importance of securing a much-needed three points against Southend United at The County Ground on Monday (3pm Kick-Off).

Town host the Shrimpers at SN1 in the opening game of 2017 tomorrow and, after suffering defeats in both of their outings over the Christmas period, Obika knows that the Reds need to hit the ground running in the New Year.

“It is tough because you want to win games and we need to go on a run. We always talk about following up a good performance but at the moment we aren’t doing that, so we need to improve on that,” he said.

“You need the confidence to flow through the team and we’ll be looking to do that against Southend.

“We drew 1-1 away at Southend in November and it was a tough game. Our away form needs to be better but they are coming to The County Ground now and we have to get the three points.

“We bring a lot of intensity into training and we need to take that into matches now.”

Obika was tasked with playing out wide against MK Dons on Friday night, a job the frontman was more than happy to do for the good of the team.

“I’m normally up top attacking but sometimes you’ve got to do a job for the team and I was happy to do that,” he added.

“It was more of a defensive role and you’ve also got to give something going forward so it was very tough but you have to go in and do your best.

“As a player you want to get into your rhythm and I’ve been unfortunate with some injuries – I’m just hoping that I get a good run in the team and start scoring again.”
