Jon Obika is still on a massive high in the wake of last weekend’s 1-0 win against Bradford City and feels everyone is now raring to go for the game against Luton Town on Tuesday evening.
Town are without a game this weekend but spirits have been high in training this week following the impressive victory against the Bantams.
“It was important to follow up the Southend result. We were strong and we were resilient in our defending – it was good to put in the same performance against a team like Bradford,” Obika told swindontownfc.co.uk.
“We do see Anton Rodgers score free-kicks like that in training but when you can do it in a game it gives the boys a lift and we had something to hold on to.
“I’ve seen my disallowed goal back and it doesn’t look like I’m offside but I know the linesman didn’t have the chance to see it back, but it did look onside when I watched it back.
“It was a massive result and it has made this week more positive. The boys can’t wait to go out against Luton and then Sheffield United in the league.”
Town may not have a game this weekend but they have still been put through their paces throughout this week.
“The coaching staff have probably pushed us more this week because we don’t have a game to look forward to on Saturday,” added Obika.
“We’ve got a couple of days off to recover.
“It is good we’ve got a bit of a break because we still have Nathan Thompson to come back who is a big miss, and also Yaser Kasim is still to come back.
“This week has come at the right time to help give us a big push until the end of the season.
“For myself personally, I feel I am getting there fitness wise and I’ve been able to work hard this week and I know I will be firing on Tuesday and next Saturday.”
Finally, Obika has been handed the captain’s armband for the last two games in Nathan Thompson’s absence, something the striker describes as a massive honour.
“I know the history of the club and you can see how Nathan holds himself with the captaincy and I’m taking things from that,” he continued.
“I like the responsibility and I always want to give my all on the pitch. I feel all of the boys are leaders and we just have to show that in games.
“Your game stays the same but in the changing room and at half-time you do need to lift the boys and try to get a positive reaction.”
