Swindon Town Football Club were deeply saddened to learn of the death of club legend Peter Noble on Saturday.
The lively forward racked up 256 appearances for The Robins between 1968 and 1973, scoring 80 goals.
Noble was first brought to The County Ground in January 1968 after The Reds parted with £8,000 in order to prise the striker away from Newcastle United.
He made his Swindon debut at the beginning of February but it was the following season where Noble really came to the fore, helping himself to sixteen goals on the domestic front as Town earned promotion to Division Two.
However, it was Noble’s exploits in the League Cup during the 1968/69 campaign that really thrust him into the spotlight as his four goals, including the extra-time winner against Burnley in the Semi-Final replay, helped Swindon beat Arsenal at Wembley to win the League Cup - an achievement that still stands as the greatest in the club’s history.
Noble was known for his ability in-front of goal and he finished as Town’s top scorer in both 1969/70 and 1971/72 with 21 and 14 goals respectively, while he also played a key role in the club winning the Anglo-Italian Cup in 1970.
Such form didn’t go unnoticed and Noble was on the move in June 1973 after Burnley paid £40,000 for his services.
More success followed as Noble helped himself to 80 goals in 299 appearances for The Clarets between 1973 and 1979, before retiring in 1983 following a stint with Blackpool, spending his later years running a successful sports shop in Burnley Market Hall.
Noble is rightly regarded as a Swindon Town legend who was a focal point in arguably the club’s most successful period in their history.
