PREVIEW: TOWN V SOUTHEND UNITED

1 January 2017

Town will be looking to open the New Year with a bang when they host Southend United at The County Ground on Monday (3pm Kick-Off).

Bank Holiday football comes to SN1 tomorrow and Luke Williams’ side will be keen to get back to winning ways after suffering a 3-2 defeat away at MK Dons on Friday evening.

Southend fared a bit better on New Year’s Eve having played out a 1-1 draw with Charlton Athletic at Roots Hall with former Robins' striker Simon Cox on the scoresheet yet again for the Blues.

These two sides have already played one another this season with a Jon Obika goal securing a share of the spoils for the Robins back in November after Will Atkinson had fired the Shrimpers into the lead.

STAT ATTACK:

Town and Southend have locked horns on 129 occasions and the Reds are able to boast the better head-to-head record with 60 wins to their name, compared to the Blues’ 42 victories.

Nathan Thompson hobbled off against the Dons but his injury isn’t expected to be serious and he could well feature against Southend.

However, Yaser Kasim is likely to miss out with a swollen ankle for the second successive game and Brandon Ormonde-Ottewill will be assessed prior to kick-off.

SOUTHEND UNITED - The Shrimpers were handed a hefty blow during their 1-1 draw with Charlton Athletic on New Year’s Eve after star winger Stephen McLaughlin suffered ankle ligament damage.

He will miss out for the Blues tomorrow while striker Marc-Antoine Fortune has recently put pen to paper on a new deal.

A WORD FROM THE TOWN CAMP:

Luke Williams, Swindon Town Head Coach: “Southend are a strong side but they are by no means unbeatable – there is a chance there for us to get something out of the game.
