Town Head Coach Luke Williams spoke to the local press in the wake of the Reds’ 4-0 defeat away at Rochdale earlier this afternoon…
“The capitulation was the most concerning thing,” he said.
“We got beat heavily against Scunthorpe and although it wasn’t anywhere near good enough, I thought Scunthorpe were absolutely outstanding and were one of the best League One teams I’ve seen in three-and-a-half seasons.
“But today with all respect to Rochdale, I don’t think they are the force anywhere near that Scunthorpe are, but to fall apart completely is very worrying.
“I’m starting to believe more and more that there is a mental weakness and an inability to recover from a deficit.
“We’ve only won by keeping a clean sheet and it seems that we go from one extreme to the other.
“If we score and score the second after that and keep a clean sheet it looks like it is going to be a rout, but as soon as we concede there seems to be a huge problem.
“We felt we could get to half-time and try to address one or two tactical problems and also try to reassure the players that we were still in the game and there were chances coming in our direction.
“It was maintaining discipline and focus and then taking the chances when they came, but to see us fall apart so quickly in the second-half was very upsetting.
“We’re trying to be able to have a Plan B and make sure we can play in different styles and not be so predictable – that process is not easy.”
Jon Obika made his long-awaited return from injury against Dale and Williams was pleased to see the striker come through the runout unscathed.
“That was a huge plus for him to come through unscathed because he’s a very important player for this squad,” he concluded.
