Town Head Coach Luke Williams expressed his frustration to members of the media in the wake of his side’s 2-0 defeat at home to Walsall earlier this evening…
ON THE RESULT AND PERFORMANCE:
“I would like to know myself (why Town’s performance was so different from Tuesday) and I need to get to the bottom of that.
“We looked like we had plenty of energy in the Rochdale game and we attacked quickly with purpose, but today we looked like we weren’t at the races and we didn’t have the initiative that we did the other night.
“I need to try and find out what it is this group needs because we play with all the ball, have chance after chance and don’t win, we play without the ball, breakaway and have a few chances but clean and clear and win a game and then today nothing.
“Maybe after the first goal we feel less energy and the team feel defeated which is a mental weakness that is potentially a problem.
“We have to get to the bottom of it.”
ON WALSALL’S TWO GOALS:
“The first goal is fantastic. He (Erhun Oztumer) hits the ball very, very quickly, he pounced on a loose pass and it is a fantastic goal.
“The second goal is one pass but he doesn’t bring it down, he doesn’t take a touch and it is incredibly difficult technique, but nevertheless we didn’t respond to the first goal and we responded even more poorly to the second goal.
“It is hard to know what the group need.
“I will try to find the perfect formula that works for this group but we all need to help each other and be responsible. It starts with me but the players need to make sure that they are giving their best all the time and are prepared and focused for each game.
“We need to keep trying to find answers all the time so that we can be a consistent team.”
ON JAMES BROPHY BEING TAKEN OFF AT HALF-TIME:
“James was struggling to breathe at half-time and his chest was tight.
“He’s had this condition recently and we can’t take any chances because it is hard for the doctor to know exactly what is going on there even though we’ve had plenty of tests.
“James’ symptoms seemed to go away so he returned to full training but he’s had a reoccurrence and it is something that we can’t risk and if a player can’t breathe then he’s not going to be much use on the pitch.”
