REACTION: Williams Gives His Thoughts After Blades Defeat

10 December 2016

Town Head Coach Luke Williams spoke to the local media in the wake of his side’s 4-0 defeat away at Sheffield United earlier today…

“We started the game brightly but we just allowed Sheffield United to get on top of us and it became more and more easy for them to get into our half and get around the box,” he said.

“It is very difficult to accept when you’ve started the game so well.

“There were a catalogue of errors that led to our opponents hitting the target, I think we’re still suffering mentally with a group that aren’t strong enough.

“We need a serious response from the group now and they need to show us that they are prepared to go into the next game with a stronger mindset, a stronger attitude towards it and it is up to them now.

“We were still very much in the game at half-time. The scoreline was level and we needed to come out of the traps fast and we needed to be positive with our mindset, but I didn’t see that - from the very opening exchanges of the second-half it looked like one-way traffic.

“I don’t think any blame can be put on Lawrence Vigouroux’s shoulders at all because he’s been spectacular throughout the whole season and he was outstanding again today.

“There’s only so much he could do.

“The two centre-backs gave everything and they didn’t hide at all, which is disappointing that we’ve lost a game so heavily when the two central defenders have been outstanding at times.

“But, other than that, I don’t think anyone could really hold their heads up.”

Michael Doughty was withdrawn at half-time and Ellis Iandolo didn’t travel, and Williams provided an update on the pair.

“Michael is not well and he’s been suffering for a while,” he added.

“He doesn’t seem to be able to get a completely clean bill of health and it was quite evident today that he didn’t have energy and he wasn’t his normal self.

“The change was obvious for us.

“Ellis trained on Thursday and came in Friday morning reporting a hamstring problem and that ruled him out.”
