Town Head Coach Luke Williams spoke to the local media in the wake of his side’s 2-0 defeat to Millwall earlier this afternoon…
“We were too easy to score against again and players in the box were not marked and dealt with,” he said.
“Luke Norris then gets a real good opportunity to score but he put the ball narrowly wide and that’s the difference, they are taking their chances that we’ve given them fairly easily and when we’ve eventually got a player in-front of the goalkeeper from a fantastic pass from Nathan Thompson and fantastic movement and first touch from Luke, we need to score.
“We know that Lee Gregory is one of the best strikers in the league, if not the best, so we needed to make sure he was marked inside the area and denied any opportunity to score an easy goal.
“If he’s going to score it needs to be something special but it was too easy.
“It is concerning and it is not just the defenders because I think it is extremely unfair to put the blame on those particular players, but it is allowing the ball to get into those areas too frequently, it is allowing balls to come into the box too frequently and it is switching off too frequently.
“There are too many things from the entire team.
“In the last game we go in-front and look like we could win the game and we didn’t look for one moment that they were accepting that they were going to be beaten in that game, and that was nine days ago.
“I do think there is a problem when this team go behind and struggle to then fight back. We did today until the second goal and then it looked like the fight went a little bit.
“I don’t think it’s that the players aren’t good enough, I think the players collectively at the moment are not quite good enough because they need more time.”
Williams also explained the decision to put Michael Doughty at left wing-back during the second-half and restoring Sean Murray to the starting XI.
“Michael is more natural on the left and his delivery has been fantastic throughout his time here, he’s been involved in so many goals so to try and put more balls into the box was the idea with that change,” he added.
“Sean Murray has been training fantastically well and he’s a talented boy, we can all see that he’s got a good range of passing and he can manipulate the ball well.
“He’s athletic and he will compete so it was a chance for Sean to try and find the passes through lines to the front players, but we probably didn’t manage to see enough of that.
“Sean did the job he was asked to do well enough.”
