Town Head Coach Luke Williams gave his thoughts to the local media in the wake of his side’s 3-1 defeat to Northampton Town at The County Ground this evening…
ON THE RESULT AND PERFORMANCE:
“I thought we had a good chance at that point (after the equaliser) to go on and win the game because it looked like we had momentum behind us and it looked like we had some new energy.
“We got what we deserved unfortunately in the end because we didn’t defend with conviction, with desire to make a tackle and it was too easy to beat people and too easy to find space inside our box.
“Our opposition were the opposite. They were fantastic in the box, they were aggressive, it was very, very difficult to get past somebody, it was very difficult to find any space inside the box and they were fantastic.
“We need to learn from them because they are a fantastic team. They make it incredibly difficult for you to score and when they get a soft chance against us they take it.
“We’ve done well at times, at Gillingham away and at the weekend, but not consistent enough.
“In general I don’t think there is a huge problem, there is of course because we lose far too many games, but I don’t think there is a problem with team spirit or togetherness.”
ON LLOYD JONES’ FITNESS:
“Lloyd was struggling a little bit after the Oldham game and wanted to play. He felt he could play 90 minutes of football but at half-time it tightened up too much and he couldn’t get any extra movement in the leg.
“I don’t think it is a tear or anything, maybe the hips are in the wrong position slightly and they need to be manipulated.
“We will address that tonight and tomorrow.”
ON THE ALLEGED FOUL ON JOHN GODDARD WHICH LED TO NORTHAMPTON’S THIRD GOAL:
“I am sure it is a tough call for the referee where he is. He was closer than me and it obviously didn’t look like a foul to him.
“But it was still a long, long way from goal and we still need to be able to defend against a ball coming into the box from a wide area.
“I don’t think we should make a big deal about it.”
ON THE PERFORMANCES OF LUKE NORRIS AND SEAN MURRAY:
“Luke Norris brought people into play a lot in the first-half in particular and he worked hard. It looks like he is getting fitter and he competes for everything in the air when we need to play a longer pass.
“I’m desperate for him to score and he’s desperate to score.
“Sean Murray showed his quality and the finish was excellent. He’s quite a way out and he’s hitting the ball across his body at an angle and his all-round play was exciting.
“I look forward to him being at full match fitness.”
