Smith Happy To Fill In At Left-Back If Needed

23 December 2016

Tom Smith feels comfortable playing at left-back and is happy to continue in that role against Millwall should he be called upon to do so.

The midfielder was first thrust into the unfamiliar position during the 1-0 win against Bradford City in November, before getting another cameo at left-back against Fleetwood Town last week.

Smith also operated as a left wing-back against Cheltenham Town in a Development game in midweek and, with the Reds short on numbers in that area, is happy to fill in if needed.

“It is obviously different and the first time I played there was the Bradford game in November,” he said.

“I came in and did a job and it is different. Looking ahead to the Millwall game, Brandon Ormonde-Ottewill has picked up an injury so I’m playing out there just in case really.

“It is different but it comes naturally to me and I don’t feel out of position to be honest because I know when to go and when to stay and I am a defensive minded player, so I do know when to go back as well.”

Smith scored a superb solo effort against Cheltenham and is hoping to add more goals to his game in the New Year.

“It came over, I took it past one player, cut inside and scored and it did come as a bit of a shock to me,” he added.

“I’ve been practising the exact same thing in training so it wasn’t too much of a fluke!

“I would like to add goals to my game and when I can pop up in those positions then I like to think I can hit the back of the net."

The young midfielder also reflected on his progress so far this season and is happy with how things have panned out.

“I’ve been doing better than I ever expected,” he continued.

“I’ve been involved many times, played ten games now so it is better than I expected.

“I’ve come off the bench a few times, I’ve started a few times and I just like to put energy into the game, make a few tackles and I’ve got two sides to my game.”
