Town in Ireland: John Goddard on pre-season and life at SN1

12 July 2016

JOHN Goddard admits that he has enjoyed pre-season training so far, describing it as a ‘world apart’ from his experience at the same stage with Woking last term.

Speaking to swindontownfc.co.uk at Town’s base in Ireland, the summer signing feels that he has adapted well to the rigours of a professional regime.

“It’s very different,” he said. “A world apart - I was part-time (at Woking) and this has been very different. Full-time, very intense and very beneficial. The boys have worked hard and been put through some tough days but we’re all making good progress and it all bodes well for the season.

“I’ve not found it too much of an issue. I’ve really enjoyed it, that’s the main thing. The boys have been really welcoming alongside the staff so it’s not made it difficult for me. I think I’ve fitted in quite easily.”

The tourists are due to play the first of two fixtures in Ireland this evening when they take on Shelbourne FC at Tolka Park (KO 7pm) and Goddard says that the match gives Town an opportunity to put their hard work on the training pitches into practise.

“It will be a good test,” he said. “We’ve had a couple of sessions today so we’re constantly working on things and trying to improve and the game gives us a chance to put those things into practise. They’ll be good opposition and hopefully we can put on a good show.”

Finally, after pulling on the red shirt for the first time last weekend in Town’s 6-0 win at Swindon Supermarine, the former Woking man added that he was looking forward to the new season at SN1.

“It was nice to get out there and get the shirt on and play with the boys,” he smiled. “I’m looking forward to the season ahead. Hopefully we can do some good things and hopefully I can show the fans what I can do.”
