Williams Previews 16/17 Season Finale

29 April 2017

Town Head Coach Luke Williams is looking for certain players to step up to the plate against Charlton Athletic on Sunday.

The Reds already know their fate for next season after relegation was confirmed last weekend and, as a result, Williams is likely to field a mixed side tomorrow with a number of players set to be given the chance to impress against The Addicks.

“This is the lowest that I’ve ever been in my professional career but previous experiences help you to deal with terrible situations like this,” he said.

“It still hurts just as much but I need to be able to cope and bounce back as best as I can.

“We’ve still got another game and we owe it to the players to prepare them and we didn’t have any extra time off.

“We’ve had a normal week in terms of the training schedule and we’ve analysed the opposition and shown the players what to expect from Charlton, so we’ve tried to prepare in the right manner.

“We must give players who are under contract and who haven’t played that much the chance to show how much they want to be a part of the plans for next season.

“It is a trial game in many ways and it is a great opposition and a great stadium to try to show what your qualities are and what you are made of.

“At the same time, we need to make sure that there are some players in the team who have been there and done it over and over and can help the players with less experience to shine.

“We have to get some balance in there but it is a very obvious opportunity for us to give players a chance to show what they can do.

“We will all remember the last game because it is a summer break and one really good performance can leave a lasting memory for staff and for fans.

“Players thrive when there is good will and when there’s people behind them, so it is very important that the players understand that they need to show they are ready for next season and are ready for a fight in League Two.”
