Di Canio - We Are Growing Up

22 September 2012

TOWN manager Paolo Di Canio spoke to the media after watching his side beat AFC Bournemouth 4-0 at The County Ground

On the performance…
We created six maybe seven clear chances and we took more of the chances that we created than at Portsmouth on Tuesday. The lads were very good today. I told the players to change their mentality; it is better to start well, take chances and build the confidence. I saw the difference in their play and we now approach home and away games in the same way. Their communication and desire is good and the players know exactly what we want.

On the scoreline…
It is obvious that we have a very clear identity. Bournemouth were missing a few players but we knew they could cause us problems. I am very happy with the way the players took on what we told them. I was very happy with the display in the first 25 minutes. We are growing up, but we still had a bit of tippy-tappy football which I don’t like. If the players want to become top, top players then they have to keep the ball better. In general I am more than happy though.

On Ritchie’s brace…
The first goal was struck beautifully and it found the top corner. For the second goal I told him to use the precision he has. Thanks to him because he is a quality player and he gave the right speed to the ball and it went in. When you put a ball in like that the goalkeeper doesn’t know what to do.

On Williams’ goal…
The movement was fantastic and Gary Roberts put a great ball in for the goal. There was good understanding between the wide areas and the forwards. We did a specific drill on Friday at training and that paid off. We need to practice more and not have days off. That’s why we practice, practice, practice.

On Thompson’s performance…
He was my man of the match today. It was his first chance at home in front of home fans and his family. He always battles hard in training and he works to hard. Individually, Nathan did very well and have a fantastic match.
