Lindsey: The Boys Gave Me Everything

3 March 2016

UNDER-18S Manager, Scott Lindsey spoke to the official website after Town’s defeat at Luton Town.

On the defeat…
I feel we didn’t test their ‘keeper at all throughout the 90 minutes. There were a lot of actions I was pleased with but we found it hard in the first 20 minutes of the game where they put a bit of a press on us. Then we got our flow a bit and started to play and started to get into positions where we could hurt them. We came in at half time and I was reasonably pleased. I thought “we’re still in a good place” and I still thought with the players we've got out there with the knowledge they had of how we play I still felt we could start opening them up a bit and create more chances. In the second half I was pleased with a lot of actions but we never tested them so I’ve got no complaints (with the result).

On team-talks…
My team talk tonight was don’t worry about standing in the tunnel against eleven oak trees. You go out and you move the ball around them - they won’t be able to live with you once you get your flow. They made it difficult for us and they were physically stronger than we were however I still felt once we got our flow, I don’t think they could get near us at times but for me it was too ‘bitty’. It wasn’t fluent enough.

On playing in a different environment…
It’s different for them rather than playing at Calne with 15/20 people watching us. It’s a little bit different. We tried to make it as normal as possible today. Before when we’ve played at stadiums in the FA Youth Cup, we’ve always turned up on the first team coach and had pre-match meals and all that sort of stuff. I felt that’s put a bit more pressure on the boys and we haven’t performed. I didn’t want to do that today – we’ve turned up on the minibus, we’ve had sandwiches on the way up here and tried to make it as normal as possible. I felt they probably reacted better tonight than they have when we’ve played at a stadium in the past. I thought they did alright, the boys. They gave me everything tonight, I have to say. Their work ethic was incredible.
