Ling: Onwards and Upwards

14 November 2015

MARTIN Ling spoke to the media after victory over Scunthorpe in his first game in charge at the County Ground.

On the win...
We were just about worth it. In the first half we looked nervy. We grew into the game in the last ten mins of the first half and that gave us forward momentum. When you haven't won for so many games we looked nervous on the ball. We just about edged it. I'd love to sit here and say it was free-flowing but we ground it out. Sometimes you have to roll your sleeves up - today wasn’t a pretty football day. I feel they showed resilience today. I love what Luke (Williams) and Ross (Embleton) have done on the training ground. Onwards and upwards as they say.

On the playing style...
We work on it all the time. If you’re going to play that way, the hardest place to do so is when things aren’t going well. The players didn’t lose belief in it so it was good to see them get their just deserts by getting a win. It gives them confidence going into Fleetwood next week.

On the decision to play two striker in attack...
I don’t think we have a stiker at the club that can lead the line as an individual. (Two strikers) gives you focus and defensive nous too because you can stop it (opposition attacks) at source. I picked that up last week. Today we had a bit more of a platform to play off. It wasn’t perfect but better with two rather than one.

On the winning goal...
It was Ben (Gladwin) at his best. He's still not fully fit yet - he's getting there slowly - but him driving in, slipping Nicky (Ajose) in. He's (Ajose) a cool customer.
