Report: Fleetwood 5-1 Town

21 November 2015

A flurry of goals at the start of the second half set the platform for a 5-1 defeat for Town at Fleetwood.

Despite going into the break just a goal down, the home side hit four goals after half time while Nicky Ajose got a consolation for the Town.

After a substitute appearance last time out against Scunthorpe, Wes Thomas was handed a starting berth against the Cod Army while Anton Rodgers was also restored to the line-up in place of Drissa Traore. Jon Obika dropped to the substitutes’ bench.

Town were on the front foot early on and Anton Rodgers drilled a shot wide. Lawrence Vigouroux then had to be alert to keep out David Henen before Nicky Ajose’s snapshot was turned away by the feet of Chris Maxwell.

Former Town loanee, David Ball twice steered shots off target while Brandon Ormonde-Ottewill saw a shot blocked at the other end following good work from Thomas to wrestle back possession in the corner.

Rodgers diverted a cross over the bar with his heel before the hosts took the lead ten minutes before the break. A low cross from the Fleetwood right cannoned into the net off Adam El-Abd. Antoni Sarcevic flashed a shot wide before the half was over.

Vigouroux reacted well at the start of the second period to push away a free-kick while Thomas headed over for Town. Moments later, Swindon’s stopper would be involved again as he brought down David Ball in the box. Sarcevic stepped up to the resultant spot-kick and struck it confidently into the corner.

Now brimming with confidence, the home side added to their lead ten minutes later when David Henen burst into space on the edge of the box and rifled a shot across Vigouroux into the corner.

Four minutes later Fleetwood added a fourth to their tally. Tarique Fosu found space in the box to squeeze a shot into the net.

Town did get on the scoresheet in the 79th minute when Nicky Ajose connected with a cross from the right to nod the ball into the far corner.

Less than five minutes later, the hosts restored their four-goal advantage in some style. Substitute, Bobby Grant picked up the ball on the right-hand corner of the box and picked out the top corner with a fine curling effort.

Jon Obika sent a shot wide in the closing stages while Vigouroux produced another save low down to his right to keep out the hosts in injury time.
