Thompson: "The Lads Showed Character"

4 March 2016

NATHAN Thompson has lauded his teammates’ character and mentality during a run which has seem the side record four consecutive victories.

Ahead of Saturday’s trip to Oldham Athletic, the skipper admits that Town must stay switched on if they are to come away from Boundary Park with a positive result.

“As a defender especially you’re always looking to keep clean sheets,” he said. “The longer we’ve gone without one it’s disappointing but I thought the lads showed real strength of character and I’ve been really impressed with the mentality they’re shown recently. I know Luke will have echoed that but I think the amount of times we’ve gone behind, not given up, scored late goals and continued to do what he asks is incredible.

“There’s a real belief in what we’re doing and we know it’s going to pay dividends if we continue to do it. Dominating possession – I mentioned it in my captain’s notes Tuesday – if we continue to do that throughout the 90 minutes opportunities will arise and thankfully, our strikers have been in very good form. They’ve put chances away when they’ve been created so that’s all we can ask and we have to continue to do that.”

He added: “The boys will get on up front and chances will be created but it’s important we do everything we can in order to thwart whatever they throw at us. We’ve defended well in periods this season so it will be very important we stay switched on at Oldham but I see no reason why we can’t go there and end their unbeaten run.”
