Williams: Worth The Point

12 March 2016

LUKE Williams spoke to the media after Town's 2-2 draw with Millwall.

On the point...
I think over the course of the 90 minutes we were worth the point. It was frustrating to start a bit slow and a bit hesitant. The break and not having a game (last weekend) we thought would potentially be a problem. What's pleasing is the way the boys came out in the second half with tempo to keep creating chances. We have shown recently with the Doncaster game - that was very controlled, we got in front and took the sting out of the game. There have been times where we’ve come from behind but I think if you want to win games you have to win different types of games. I'd prefer a few more when we go in front but at the moment they (the players) are showing tremendous character to keep coming back. We (the coaching staff) can try to help them with ideas and how to break down different teams with different strengths. We try to give them a structure and scenarios in training but really that’s only a small part of it. The players have to be able to see things live and react to things on the pitch and that’s what they’ve done again today.

On character...
One thing we’ve seen with this group is that players are prepared to step out of their comfort zone. Credit to the players. It can be nerve-wracking on the side of the pitch but when you see this group you remain slightly calmer. They’ve got depth of character and they’ll fight to the end. You know they’re never giving up.

On standing up to the physical side of the game...
Most weeks I think it’s a physical mis-match for a lot of players in the team. They deal with it by trying to be clever, by defending in numbers and by having a lot of the ball. On the whole you’d have to say they deal with the situation of being 'outweighted', if you like.

On Michael Doughty...
Michael is enjoying having that bit more license. He’s probably been a bit frustrated at times in his career that he's not been able to show people how many strings he’s got to his bow. He's certainly showing everyone at Swindon. I think QPR will be impressed with how dynamic he is.
