World Cup Connection: Jan Åge Fjørtoft

12 June 2014

SWINDONTOWNFC.CO.UK profiles the second Town player to go to a World Cup finals in 1994.

Jan Åge Fjørtoft was signed by John Gorman in the summer of 1993, earning a big-money move from Austrian side, Rapid Vienna.

After initially struggling to settle in at SN1, the Norwegian caught fire in the second half of Swindon's season in the Premier League, finishing the season with 13 goals in 17 games.

He went on to play every minute of Norway's opening two fixtures of USA '94, as the Scandinavians beat Mexico and lost to Italy but didn't feature in Norway's final group game against the Republic of Ireland.

After the World Cup, the striker picked up where he left off at The County Ground and helped fire Swindon to the semi-finals of the League Cup in 1995. His goal-scoring form caught the attention of other clubs and prompted Middlesbrough to part with over £1 million on transfer deadline day to secure his services.

A cult hero at The CG, Fjørtoft left Wiltshire having netted close to 40 goals in all competitions  for the Town.
