Cast your mind back seven days…

The eve of the new season, and optimism high. Well that's changed a little with a couple of defeats, and maybe a touch of realism has crept in. It was a case of déjà vu on Saturday, losing on the opening day just like last season.

It wasn't 5-0, as 12 months ago, but it was still a loss. Brighton made it very difficult for the Town, as you would expect them to do, and at times they defended brilliantly.
Charlie got off the mark, and there was a great crowd of just over 10,000. But it was a defeat, and that Saturday evening still had a rather flat feeling.

And so on to Tuesday….

Charlie Austin is denied against Leyton Orient

I missed the game due to my day (or is it night?) job of presenting the South West Late Show, but I was still following the scores avidly. Great to see JP repeat what he did twelve months ago, and score in the League Cup. Sadly though no big match in round two, and the O's took the win.

How annoying is Alex Revell becoming…? A goal for Wycombe at the end of last season, and one on Tuesday.

Football was put into perspective though later that evening. During my programme the news broke that Exeter City striker Adam Stansfield had passed away at the age of 31.

Adam had been diagnosed with bowel cancer a few months ago, just before City played at Swindon in fact. We had some very emotional texts and phone calls, including some from Crystal Palace, and Plymouth Argyle fans. It shows that supporters really do rally round at such times.

We wish Adam's family all the best at this time, and Exeter's game at Dagenham has been called off this weekend, which is appropriate and not surprising really.

And so to Hartlepool….

A six o'clock alarm will start me off on the long journey north…a bit of a shock after getting to bed at two am. Still hopefully we can repeat the result of last season.

Charlie's goal was enough to give us all three points back then, and at that time optimism was very high. Let's hope that scoreline is the same, and we can all get into the new term and enjoy it.

If you're travelling to Victoria Park, shout LOUD, if you're at home shout LOUD.

Keep it loud, keep it proud, keep it SWINDON.

Till next week

Vic
