It's not been the most fruitful of periods for us over the last few days, but we're still well in the hunt at the top of the table, and hopefully we can get back on track with a win this weekend.

I thought we played well enough to win the game against Exeter on MONDAY, but unfortunately it wasn't to be and we couldn't secure the victory.

We had a few opportunities but their 'keeper played very well on the night and they defended very well in fairness to them.

It was a frustrating night all in all really because I think we had enough possession in and around their box in the second half to find the opening.

But credit should go to the players really because they kept going right to the end, and even though they left it pretty late to get the equaliser, I think we thoroughly deserved it when it came.

What with the Colchester result as well, it hasn't been the greatest couple of matches for us, but we played quite well there too but just lacked a bit of cutting edge in the end.

Obviously it's been a shame to drop points but sometimes you get matches like these last two we've had, and we've just go to bounce back which I'm sure the players will do.

We then set off on TUESDAY morning towards the National Sports Centre at Bisham Abbey for a couple of days away with the players, hoping to recharge the batteries ready for the last few games of the season.

As Danny said to the press in the week, it was important to give the lads a bit of a change of scenery and a different routine, just to freshen the thing up more than anything really.

With the transfer window closed we can't bring any new players in to change the squad and introduce new elements to it, but there are certain things you can do to alter the routine and try and take the heat off a little bit - which was the point of the exercise.

As far as the training was concerned, we didn't really do anything different to what we would usually do, but we got some good work done.

The pitches were good there, and the facilities were excellent which helped us get a good session in before heading back to the hotel for the night.

We did keep informed on the other scores and how our rivals were getting on, and the results went pretty much how we expected really so we weren't too concerned.

On WEDNESDAY the players had the day off so we gave them the choice of a round of golf or a day out at Thorpe Park, and there was a pretty even spread around who chose where to go!

Danny and I had a bit of lunch and a chat about a few things as regards the rest of the season, and had a bit more of a relaxing day, as I don't really think I would have been much good on the old Helter Skelter!

All in all it was a good couple of days away and we're hoping it's done the trick.

We arrived back at The County Ground on THURSDAY lunchtime after travelling back from London in the morning, and we put the boys through their paces again after lunch.

They looked very lively and we had a good session which was exactly what Danny and I wanted, and expected after a few days away.

It was fairly high octane back at The Liddington as we started the preparation for the Walsall game at the weekend.

Training on FRIDAY was the usual type of thing, i.e. working on a bit more shape for the weekend's game, and generally making sure everyone is focused and ready for the match - which I'm sure they will be.

In terms of the match itself, I don't think it matters at all that Walsall are in mid-table, because every team always has something to play for.

As many people have said many times before, on their given day, anybody can beat anybody in this league, and we saw with how well Exeter played on Monday that there are good teams up and down the table.

But it's not for us to worry about how they play really; we know that if we play the way we can and take our opportunities more than we have done in the last couple of games, then we should come away with the points.

As long as we keep doing the things we've done all season that have got us into this position, then hopefully we'll keep a clean sheet and get a good result against Walsall.

See you there,

Peter Shirtliff
