Danny Wilson offered his views to the media after watching his side beat Southampton 3-0 in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy first round on Tuesday evening.

The manager was delighted with his side's showing from a match in which they had been rarely troubled at St. Mary's.

He said: "I was pleased with our work ethic, defensive covering, and counter attacking. It was the perfect away performance.

"It's not just the fact we're through, it's the manner in which we go through.

"To a man we closed the game down very well and Dave's only had one save to make, and to have that at St Mary's is brilliant."

Vincent Pericard bagged his first two goals in a Town shirt to cap a fine individual performance, and Wilson was particularly pleased to have seen the frontman open his account.

"I've been very disappointed with some of the criticism he's received, because every time he's come on he's made an impact," he said.

"He's a great lad, he puts the work in and it's a big, big bonus for him to get those goals tonight and hopefully he can push on from here."

The manager moved away from his favoured 4-4-2 formation for the clash, choosing to employ J-P McGovern in a free role behind Pericard and Charlie Austin, and he was more than satisfied with the way the changes to shape and personnel proved so effective.

He said: "We had little pockets where we knew we had the qualities to hurt them, and we did that tonight.

"J-P was very difficult to pick up as a defender in that gap, and the timing of all our midfield movements was very good.

"The likes of Timms, Callum Kennedy and Kevin (Amankwaah) have come in and done very well, as well as young Simon (Ferry) buzzing around like we know he can."

Club captain Jonathan Douglas was withdrawn after just 22 minutes with injury, and Wilson insists it was a precautionary measure, whilst heaping praise on Douglas' replacement Will Evans.

"His (Douglas') hamstrings were very tight, so we could not take a risk on him," he said.

"Young Will has got the ability to play in there (in midfield), and has done when he was a young kid.

"He did very well, and he'll get better as we go along. He can be very satisfied with that performance."

Town travel to league leaders Carlisle United on Saturday, and while confident ahead of the clash, Wilson was keen to guard against any potential complacency ahead of the trip.

He said: "There is obviously a lot to be taken from tonight's performance, but what we don't want is to think Carlisle won't make us do the same work we've had to do tonight.

"They're top of the league for a reason so their confidence will be very high, so we'll have to put that work in.

"We would have loved to have got out of the blocks quickly, but it's important people understand we need a bit of time to get going and hopefully this result will help us do that."
