Swindon Town win 4-3 on penalties

A goal inside injury-time from Stuart Fleetwood sent Town's Johnstone's Paint Trophy tie to a penalty shoot-out at Exeter City, with a double save in the shoot-out from Phil Smith enough to send Town through.

Town made three changes to the starting line-up for the Johnstone's Paint Trophy clash against Exeter City. Phil Smith made his first start of the season in place of David Lucas whilst Michael Timlin and Lecsinel Jean-Francois came in for Simon Ferry and Callum Kennedy.

The Robins kept faith with the 4-3-3 formation and forced two corners inside the first five minutes, although home stopper Andy Marriott was not tested. Richard Logan, a goalscorer against Swindon seven days ago, partnered Barry Corr in the front line with both looking to make an impression. A poor clearance from Douglas allowed Logan an early opportunity but his half volley flew narrowly wide from the edge of the box.

Ben Hutchinson went down after a foul on the half-way line but after brief treatment was able to continue. Dan Seabourne was then spoken to by the Referee Mr R East following a dubious challenge on Amankwaah - a goalscorer against The Grecians in the recent League One meeting.

Hutchinson then blazed over from 16 yards out but his blushes were spared by the linesman's flag which signalled offside from the cross. The on-loan striker then volleyed a low drive from the same distance following a cross from Jean-Francois, which Marriott gathered.

Town opened the scoring on 17 minutes with Anthony McNamee catching Marriott unawares. The winger collected a pass through from Douglas, before advancing towards the box on the left hand edge of the area and saw his deep cross rise over the home keeper and into the far corner of the net.

Jonathan Douglas could have doubled the lead moments later but saw his efffort blocked from close range before Barry Corr headed wide at the other end with 22 minutes on the clock. Douglas then combined with Hutchinson to set up the loanee who saw his right foot shot fire over from nine yards.

Andy Marriott was then forced into a smart save to deny McGovern on 35 minutes at the foot of the right post following a fine cross from the lively McNamee following some great build-up play. Phil Smith then made his first real stop of the night to deny Stansfield following a rare error at the back from Greer.

Phil Smith then made another superb save to deny James Dunne who saw his ambitious 25 yard lob tipped over by Smith.

Paul Tisdale made one change at the break with Barry Corr replaced by former Reading midfielder Scott Golbourne whilst Swindon remained unchanged, looking to build on a positive first half display.

Alex Revell had Town's first opporunity of the second half, bringing the ball down on the edge of the box before forcing a low save from Marriott in front of the Swindon fans behind the goal.

Anthony McNamee saw his promising run result in a curling effort from inside the box but the ball landed the wrong side of the post with the home keeper rooted to the spot.

Jon-Paul McGovern's superb ball into the box set-up Hutchinson just after the hour but after bringing the ball down, the loanee was denied by a block just as he was going to open up on goal.

Berti Cozic became the first player to be cautioned on the night after a foul on Michael Timlin in front of the Town bench before Fleetwood came on to replace James Dunne.

Lee Peacock then came off the bench to replace Alex Revell in the front line for his first taste of first team action since March with twenty minutes remaining.

The home side then built up a spell of pressure with several corners forced before the 75-minute mark was up. Stuart Fleetwood's appeals for a penalty were waved away on 76 minutes after a challenge from Cuthbert, before Neil Saunders entered the fray in place of Steve Tully for the final Exeter change.

Lee Peacock should have doubled the lead after finding way through but his touch took him far too wide of Marriott and the keeper was able to get back to turn the ball around.

Charlie Austin came off the bench on 88 minutes, replacing Ben Hutchinson in the front line for his Town debut after signing from Poole Town.

Inside the three minutes of injury-time a flick on from Logan was met by Fleetwood who was on hand to lift the ball over Phil Smith from seven yards to send the game to a shoot-out.

IN PROFILE: ALEX HENSHALL

A surprise inclusion on the Town bench on Tuesday was 15-year old winger Alex Henshall. The midfielder was recently named in the England Under 16 squad to face Wales at Huish Park on Thursday 15th October.

Henshall joined Swindon as an eight-year old where he was first coached by Jeremy Newton, now Town's Centre of Excellence Manager. Henshall rose through the youth ranks and at 12-years old was offered a four-year contract by the club.

Alex Henshall warms up at Exeter City

In July 2009 he travelled with the Town squad to the Northern Ireland Milk Cup where he Captained the side to the Quarter-Finals of the Junior Section, losing out 1-0 to Everton. His performances in the Milk Cup caught the attentions of England scouts and he was subsequently included in an England Under 16's training camp at Burton Albion in September.

Henshall will wear squad number 33.
