CARLISLE IN TOWN THIS SATURDAY
We are back in action at The County Ground in a few days time when promotion-chasing Carlisle United visit on Saturday 15th March 2008.
The Cumbrians handed out a 3-0 thrashing of Swindon in the last fixture between the two sides in December 2007. A brace from Joe Anyinsah and a late effort from Joe Garner sealed Swindon's fate, on a night which also saw young defender Ben Tozer sent off. It was to be his last appearance in a Town shirt before a lucrative switch to North East giants Newcastle United.
Swindon don't have a bad record against Carlisle at The County Ground though and have won all five of the most recent clashes between the two on home turf. The most recent of which came in November 2006 in the FA Cup First Round. An own goal from Chris Lumsdon and a double strike from then-striker Christian Roberts sealed an impressive victory over higher-division opposition.
Carlisle currently have two players on their books with Swindon connections. Grant Smith and Neale McDermott have both spent time with The Robins and will be looking forward to a return to their former club.
After leaving Swindon for Bristol City in the summer of 2005, 27-year old Smith spent just one-year at Ashton Gate before signing a short-term contract with Dundee United in September 2006, agreeing to stay until the next transfer window in January 2007.
Smith, the son of former Rangers and Brighton & Hove Albion striker and current BBC football pundit Gordon, was on trial at Hibernian in February 2007 but then signed a one-year deal with Finnish club HJK Helsinki in April 2007. Also during his time in Finland, he had a brief loan spell with Klubi-04. The midfielder returned to England in January 2008 and joined Carlisle United on a short-term contract until the end of the season, after a successful trial spell. He made his debut off the bench in the 1-1 draw at Port Vale and looks set to feature against Swindon.

Another player to have spent time in Robins colours is midfielder Neale McDermott. An industrious midfielder, McDermott joined Swindon on loan from Fulham in September 2005. Scored against Bristol City to increase his popularity with the Swindon faithful in a 2-1 Friday night derby win. Made a total of 13 appearances before returning to The Cottagers. Moved to Carlisle on a free transfer in August 2006 but has failed to make an impact, with just six league starts to his name as a Cumbrian.
Carlisle are currently hot on the heels of League One pacesetters Swansea City. With Carlisle United the next visitors to The County Ground; Swindon could yet have their say in the promotion shake-up.
