BYRNE ON ORIENT VICTORY

Posted on: Fri 26 Dec 2008

David Byrne was delighted to take all three points from the trip to Leyton Orient as he signed off his reign in temporary charge of the side with victory.

Goals from Lee Peacock and Jack Smith sealed the victory which lifted Town into 18th place in League One.

Speaking to the media after the game, Byrne offered his views on a good job done at The Matchroom Stadium.

"We had a good start to the game and the game plan worked," he reflected.

"The plan was for Lee Peacock and Lilian Nalis to play as defensive midfielders but after Peacock scored so early we pushed Orient back.

"We dealt with everything that Orient had to throw at us - although I'd like to have kept a clean sheet.

"Today you've seen a group of players who wore the shirt with pride. That win was for our away supporters, people follow us week in, week out.

"I'm delighted that the fans have something to shout about."

The former youth team manager also gave his views on the news that Danny Wilson is to take over the managerial reins at The County Ground.

"I'm delighted that Danny Wilson has accepted the manager's job. I spoke to Danny earlier and he wished us good luck.

"Danny will come in with a few new ideas and objectives and I can only gain from working with him, whether that is for a short or long period of time."

Byrne also added his views on the second half penalty which Jack Smith slid home to seal the important victory.

"There was no debate about who was going to take the penalty, as soon as Jack Smith saw the penalty awarded, he grabbed the ball but Coxy was also happy for him to take it.

"I'll go home and have a nice glass of wine and relax for the first time in seven weeks. I've enjoyed the caretaker role although it's been harder this time around with two-all draws but that's football.

"It sets us up nicely for Sunday against Brighton but we want the players to believe that we can play well for longer periods."
