OAKLEY WINS PLAYER OF THE MONTH

Posted on: Wed 11 Feb 2009

Leicester City midfielder Matt Oakley has won the January Powerade Player of the Month Award in Coca-Cola League 1.

Oakley was in inspirational form for the Foxes in January, helping them register maximum points in all but one of their five league games. He began the month by scoring the opening goal in his side's comprehensive home win over Leyton Orient, before helping them to further victories against Yeovil Town and Huddersfield Town. A goaless draw against Brighton & Hove Albion ensured the Foxes kept up their unbeaten run and they rounded off another hugely successful month with three points against Northampton Town to extend their lead at the top of Coca-Cola League 1.

Also short-listed for the January award were Mark Yeates of Colchester United, Aaron Wilbraham of Milton Keynes Dons and Scunthorpe United's Gary Hooper.

Chris Kamara, chairman of the Powerade Player of the Month Awards panel, said: "Matt Oakley has marshalled his Leicester side superbly over the past few months. His experience in the heart of midfield is proving vital for Nigel Pearson's side as they look to maintain their bid to return to the Championship at the first time of asking."

Joe Ledley Hunt of Cardiff City won the award in the Championship and Dany N'Guessan of Lincoln City landed the League 2 accolade.

The Powerade Awards panel, chaired by Sky Sports pundit and Coca-Cola Ambassador Chris Kamara, made the decision. The panel also includes Steve Bates, Chairman of the Football Writers' Association, Malcolm Clarke, Chairman of the Football Supporters' Federation and Steve Watts, Marketing Assets Manager, Coca-Cola Great Britain.
