Swindon Town Boss Danny Wilson was left to reflect on a shock result at Gillingham as the hosts put five goals in on the opening day.
Wilson admitted his team were swept aside by a confident performance from Mark Stimpson's men, who enjoyed their first game back in League One after promotion via the play-offs last term.
"It couldn't have got any worse, I'm totally gobsmacked," he said speaking to the media.
"The pre-season programme went very well but to put in a defensive performance like that is a complete shock to the system. However, it's a shock and we have to see a response to it.
"We have to repay the fans on Tuesday with a performance at MK Dons because today that was a shadow of what we can do. It just goes to prove, that pre-season means nothing because if you don't play well then that's what happens.
"We did have four or five good chances in the first half but we didn't really test their keeper. In the second half we were all over the place and Gillingham cut right through us - from front to back.
"It's very difficult to take. Gillingham looked bright throughout their side and all credit to them. We didn't pass the ball well and looked very timid in possession."
He added: "We have to change for Tuesday and that's what we have to target now, to get over a very disappointing performance."
