REACTION: WILSON PRAISES 'FANTASTIC' TOWN

Posted on: Tue 18 Aug 2009

Swindon Town boss Danny Wilson praised his side after earning all three points against Southampton.

A first half goal from Sean Morrison proved to be the winner in front of over 11,000 at The County Ground.

"It was a terrific game and a terrific performance. We showed a lot more energy than we did on Saturday and played a lot of passing football. There were a few nervy moments at the end but we defended well.

"The goal came about after a great free-kick from Jon-Paul McGovern and Sean was there to finish it off. He should be getting goals from set-pieces, as should some other players in the team. Sean showed what he is capable of but you have to put the balls in the right areas and J-P did that to perfection.

"Southampton will be a force to be reckoned with this season. Kelvin Davies played superbly and he has started the season very well. Southampton as a side will do well and you can see why they are tipped to be challenging at the top.

"However I think we deserved the win and we were worthy for it. We can't emphasise enough how important the defensive side of the game is and the players trusted each other when defending today. We linked the ball well through to midfield and the side worked hard, in and out of possession. Last weekend we didn't work hard enough; tonight was quite the opposite. They worked for their angles and all credit to them."

Jonathan Douglas

Jonathan Douglas was also credited with an outstanding performance and he was named Man of the Match by Match Sponsors Robert & Sons and Brakes.

"He was in the hub of everything and you can understand why we have brought him to the club. Good players can do it and he is difficult to pin down. He can anticipate things well and tonight he was one of a number of players who played very well."

The boss also praised the home support with a five-figure crowd in Town to see the visit of The Saints.

"The crowd inspired us tonight and the fans got really behind us. They were up for it - as were the players and that played a big part and I would like to thank them for their tremendous backing.

He added: "The important thing now is for us to go out to Oldham Athletic on Saturday and put in another positive performance."
