WILSON: "AN OPPORTUNITY LOST"

Posted on: Sat 22 Aug 2009

Swindon Town boss Danny Wilson hopes his players will learn from 'an opportunity lost' at Boundary Park after being held to a 2-2 draw.

Jon-Paul McGovern and Billy Paynter were on target against The Latics and Swindon came agonisingly close to securing a victory which would have left Town on the edges of the play-off places.

Speaking after the game Danny Wilson offered his views to the media after an afternoon of mixed emotions.

"To go two one up may have been fortunate but we would have taken it. However away from home at Oldham, and to take a point, will do but we could have taken the win. We should have shut up shop," said Wilson.

"Their last goal was a complete fluke but we should have defended a lot better. Those decisions we made in defending that goal have cost us. We have made three or four bad decisions which allowed the goal to be scored. The game should have been dead and buried with the little time left."

Wilson acknowledged the battling qualities shown by his side and credited both goalscorers after impressive and composed finishes.

"We did enough to go in on level terms. The first goal we conceded was poor but we rallied and hit the post and had a go. We got the break in the second half but we were unable to capitalise on it.

"The keeper lined the wall up but J-P showed tremendous execution to score that one and it was a great goal.

He continued: "The second one from Billy came as a result of some good pressure and we can learn from that. Away from home picking up a point is always a bonus and we can now go into a fantastic game on Tuesday night.

"There was an opportunity here today. It was in our grasp but we let it go. Hopefully that's a lesson learned for the players."

Town now return to Wiltshire before travelling to Premier League opponents Wolverhampton Wanderers in the second round of the Carling Cup on Tuesday evening.

"Tuesday will be tough but I am sure the players will raise their game and it's a game everybody will look forward to."
