Swindon Town boss Danny Wilson praised the resilience of his side as The Robins took all three points from a tough night at Edgeley Park.
Wilson was particularly delighted with the win in a match in which they had come under pressure for large periods, against a side boasting five new signings.
He said: "We knew the five players they'd brought it would have an effect, and they did and gave us a very tough game.
"There was nothing in the game, and we've taken one chance and got the points."
Victory was secured through a second half penalty from Billy Paynter, who stepped up to rifle home his 14th goal of the campaign.
"It was a stonewall penalty, it was a great drive from Kevin Amankwaah to get forward and get into the box.
"When you're on a run like this you get those breaks and Stockport didn't, but that's the way it's been going.
"It was a very difficult surface and it did have an effect on both teams. You can't fight the pitch and you have to play the ball a bit longer, which we did when we needed to."

Wilson continued: "We are delighted with clean sheet - the lads saw the game out brilliantly today.
"There have been lessons learnt from previous games, we've seen the game out and good teams do that.
"We kept possession of the ball quite well, and they got tired and leggy and that's when we killed the game off.
"Some other teams might have gone under, but our lads at the back did very, very well.
"Stockport have got a good set of lads here, and if they play like that I can see them winning a few games.

"We're just glad to come here and put the game to bed because it's a difficult place to come."
The Manager also reserved praise for the front two - with Charlie Austin and Billy Paynter both putting in hardworking 90-minute displays on a boggy Edgeley Park surface.
"The chances didn't fall for them in the box but they won't be amongst the goals all the time.
"They helped us secure the ball and when they are not scoring they still contribute a lot to the team because their work-rate is excellent. Billy scored the penalty but they both put in a good shift."
"When they're not scoring you can see what they add to the team, and their work rate was excellent."
