The 25-year-old hitman has bagged five goals in four games during the month, including a brace in the 3-0 win over Leeds United at The County Ground.

Paynter beat off competition from Norwich City striker Chris Martin, Leyton Orient defender Tamika Mkandawire and Bristol Rovers midfielder Chris Lines.

The Coca Cola Manager of the Month award, for which Town boss Danny Wilson was nominated, was awarded to Norwich City boss Paul Lambert.

Paynter will hope to add to his tally with Charlton Athletic the visitors this afternoon, with a 3pm kick-off at The County Ground.

The club are expecting a 10,000 plus gate for the game with tickets available right up until kick-off.

Also short-listed for the January award were Chris Lines of Bristol Rovers, Tamika Mkandawire of Leyton Orient and Norwich's Chris Martin.

Charlie Adam of Blackpool won the award in the Championship and Ryan Lowe of Bury was given the League 2 accolade.

The decision to present the Coca-Cola League 1 Player of the Month award was made by the Coca-Cola Player of the Month awards panel which includes former World Cup referee Jack Taylor, on behalf of The Football League, Steve Bates, Chairman of the Football Writers' Association, Malcolm Clarke, Chairman of the Football Supporters' Federation and Steve Watts, Marketing Assets Manager, Coca-Cola Great Britain.
