Di Canio: 'Keep calm - the road is long'

Posted on: Wed 22 Feb 2012

On the win…

We are lucky, absolutely. For the first 55 minutes Shrewsbury deserved to be in front. Maybe they should have had a penalty in the second half but we then went on to dominate the game. It's the first time in a while that we have had some luck and the win makes me very happy. Before the game I saw some of my players white in the face, they looked shy.

On the second half…

In the second half we showed why we should be at the top of the league. I haven't seen another side sustain so much pressure and then dominate the game. At half-time I said I was curious to see if we were capable of keeping the ball and then winning. And we did that. We showed more anger and more discipline. In the second half we showed we are warriors with lots of determination.

On Connell's introduction…

I believe in the quality we have here. Connell's goals were key to the victory and he was there to score the goals. Rooney had the shot for the second goal and it was great skill. It was a great piece of football and we have seen that movement from him in training.

On Risser's second half impact…

When Risser came on we had more discipline and more experience. Two or three long deliveries went in and we needed to deal with them so we brought Boateng off and put Risser on. The introduction of Ferry was key too.

On reaching the top of the league…

We have thought about this for seven months. Now we must not lose our focus. If we play like we played for the last half an hour against Shrewsbury then we will win most games. We have achieved something important in getting to the top of the league but it is a long road and there are many games to play. There are many teams around us but it's a good position to be in. We can extend the gap between ourselves and fourth place; that is what we have to do. Once we have done that then we need to think about winning the title.
