Swindon Town manager Maurice Malpas has indicated that he is hoping to bring players of a Championship standard to the club this summer.

The boss, currently in Scotland, spoke to the official website and offered the latest on his search for new talent.

"At the moment we are touching base with a lot of agents, and we have spoken to a couple of players. I don't want to put a timescale on it, because we want to make sure we get the right ones.

"The Play-Offs are a key factor and a lot of clubs haven't even spoken to their players in terms of next season yet.

"We have made an approach for several players. For example I was in Glasgow on Tuesday to speak to an agent, who has indicated that his client would like to play in the Coca-Cola Championship rather than in League One. However, we are aiming high because we want players who could hold their own in the next league up.

"It's the ambition we have. We want players who can take the club forward, rather than just being content with playing in League One.

"The clubs who have come up, such as MK Dons and Peterborough United are big spenders so we have to prepare ourselves correctly and make sure we improve the squad in the right way."

Malpas has been speaking with a number of agents and players, although admits his search has not yet been narrowed down to a particular type as he looks to keep all options open.

"At the moment I don't want to shut any doors. We are looking for experienced players as well as a couple of younger ones, perhaps on loan.

"I don't want to sign players for the sake of it, so I would like to think that our fans can be patient."
