Walsall want a new manager in by the weekend and have already spoken to potential candidates.
Chris Hutchings, Maurice Malpas and Kit Symons have contacted the club and former Colchester boss Geraint Williams is keen. Saddlers legend Alan Buckley has also expressed an interest.
Front-runner and former Wolves coach John Ward was ruled out yesterday. Assistant manager John Schofield remains in charge on a caretaker basis and is taking training ahead of Saturday's League One trip to Peterborough.
The Saddlers' football consultant Paul Taylor says the board are looking for a quick replacement for Jimmy Mullen ahead of the trip to face Posh. He said: "The board would like something to be sorted out as soon as possible. It doesn't always go that way, but it would be good if someone was in place by the weekend. We have to play it by ear.
"They have spoken to several people and will continue until they feel it is right to move ahead."
Taylor revealed the club had been inundated with applications to succeed Mullen and he has been impressed with the calibre of candidates, who have come from England and the continent.
He said: "There have been so many applications or phone calls and it shows a lot of people want it.
"They've had some from this country and some from abroad and a lot of people would like to have the chance of the job.
"There are the ones with no chance, but there are some very good applicants who are very interesting."
But Taylor effectively ruled out a move for any employed manager, believing it was not the club's policy to approach a boss already in a job.
He added: "I don't think, with the way the board at Walsall work they would want to go and appoint a manager in a job - it is not the way they do it."

Danny Wilson believes hard work during Swindon's enforced winter break is already paying dividends as his new side begin to show evidence that they are heading "in the right direction."
The 49-year-old has only sat in the County Ground dugout twice during his two-and-a-half-week reign, due to Town's early exit from the FA Cup and a frozen pitch causing a postponement at the weekend.
But Wilson saw enough differences between December's home defeat to Brighton and Tuesday night's draw against Stockport to suggest his new side can escape from the clutches of a League One relegation dog fight.
"It's going to be a slow process, but from the players' point of view they have been very receptive to what we want," revealed the manager.
"They want to better themselves as well and want to get onto a decent run - hopefully this is the start of it and they will take confidence from it.

Ex-Swindon striker Christian Roberts has lined up a host of big names for his benefit match, which will be held at the County Ground on 11 February.
He has arranged a game between Swindon and Chelsea All-Star squads including the likes of Gianfranco Zola, Roberto Di Matteo, Paul Bodin and Sam Parkin.
Roberts told BBC Radio Swindon he owes a lot to Dennis Wise and Gus Poyet.
"I don't know how I can thank them. It's amazing two people have gone out of their way to help," said Roberts.
