Signed from Watford in the summer of 2005, Smith added youthful experience to the Town side.
Due to the departure of Paul Robinson to West Bromwich Albion he was thrust into the first-team spotlight at Watford and coped admirably, registering two goals - the first of which a 'Goal of the Season' contender at Sheffield United in front of the Sky Sports cameras.
He made 38 league starts for Town last season in a variety of positions including right back, left back and midfield.
Smith scored his first goal for the club from the spot during the pre-season tour to Ibiza and followed that up by opening the scoring, also from the penalty spot, in the 2-1 win over MK Dons in September 2006. He went on to enjoy a solid season at right-back during the promotion-winning campaign.
The defender started the 2007-08 in solid form, despite pressure from summer signing Miguel Comminges. However, a dislocated shoulder at Swansea City at the start of October will now rule Smith out for up to six weeks, with a return likely in mid November.
