Goalkeeper Phil Smith joined Town in July 2006  from Crawley Town and made his first start for the club in the Carling Cup defeat by Brentford in August 2006.

A dependable customer, Smith was made to wait for his chance which came following an unfortunate injury to Peter Brezovan in October.

The 'keeper had impressed enough to be handed a new two-year contract by Christmas of his first season and played a definitive part in the promotion campaign, making a string of superb saves to earn his side numerous points.

His heroics beween the sticks for the '06-'07 didn't go unnoticed by the fans, who named him their Player of the Season in May 2007.

Smith had made over 50 appearances for The Robins before the start of the 2008/2009 season. He enjoyed regular spells in the side in September, November and December but after losing his place to Peter Brezovan in the New Year, returned to the starting line-up.

The 30-year-old endured a frustrating campaign in 2009/2010 in the face of David Lucas' imperious form but still made some telling contributions to the campaign, not least in the Play-Off Semi-Final second leg against Charlton Athletic at The Valley, in which he made a string of excellent saves and helped Town secure a place at Wembley.

He made 33 starts in Season 2010/11, and competes with Mark Scott and Mattia Lanzano for a starting place at The County Ground.
