Goalkeeper Phil Smith joined Swindon in July 2006 from Crawley Town and made his first start for the club in the Carling Cup defeat by Brentford in August 2006.
Smith had made 74 starts for Crawley Town during a two-year stay, which followed a year's spell at Margate where he made 35 starts. A dependable customer, Smith was made to wait for his chance which came following an unfortunate injury to Peter Brezovan in October.
The keeper had impressed enough to be handed a new two-year contract by Christmas and played a definitive part in the promotion campaign making a string of superb saves to earn his side numerous points.
After being released by Millwall as a youngster, Smith spent time in non-league with Crawley and Margate. When Crawley went into administrations he signed for Swindon in the summer of 2006 under Dennis Wise and impressed during the promotion campaign after deputizing for the injured Peter 'Brez' Brezovan.
He has been solid in goal ever since and picked up the PFA Fans Player of the Month for December 2006 which was presented on before the home game against Macclesfield Town. Smith was also rewarded for his efforts, with a two year extension , ensuring he had a future at the club, until 2009 at least.
His heroics beween the sticks for the '06-'07 didn't go unnoticed by the fans, who named him their Player of the Season in May 2007.
Had made over 50 appearances for The Robins before the start of the 2008/09 season. Enjoyed regular spells in the side in September, November and December but after losing his place to Peter Brezovan in the New Year, returned to the starting line-up.
