REPORT: SWINDON TOWN 3 - 2 TRANMERE ROVERS

18 August 2018

Town produced their second home comeback of the season to beat Tranmere Rovers 3-2 in an entertaining SkyBet League Two fixture, with Joe Romanski the hero.

The Reds found themselves two goals down within 15 minutes, but a first half red card for the visitors tipped the game on its head and the Robins took full advantage with three unanswered goals.

The result leaves Swindon with six points from their opening three league fixtures.

Nine minutes in, Tranmere seized an early lead through Jonny Smith - who was on hand at the back post to tap in after Connor Jennings slid the ball through.

The away side doubled their lead three minutes later through James Norwood, who latched onto a through ball and poked under the onrushing Lawrence Vigouroux.

Despite falling behind, the Reds we offered a lifeline 18 minutes in after Jay Harris was given his marching orders for a high foot on Martin Smith.

Two minutes later, Town were on the scoresheet themselves after Elijah Adebayo finished off a flowing move through the middle of the park.

The on-loan Fulham man smartly tucked the ball inside the far post to notch his first goal in Swindon colours, cutting the deficit to one with three quarters of the game still to play.

The Reds were in the mood for more, and on the half-hour mark Adebayo was inches away from heading a Matt Taylor cross in at the far post.

Taylor himself was the next to try his luck - and he forced Scott Davies into a smart stop at his near post.

As the first half drew to a conclusion, Keshi Anderson nearly capitalised on a ricochet in the penalty area, but could only fire over on the volley from the penalty spot and the Reds went into the break a goal down.

When play resumed, Town continued to press on and Michael Doughty stung the palms of Davies from 25-yards out.

The next chance of note fell to Smith, but he could not keep his effort on target after some tenacious work down the right from Kyle Knowle and Jermaine McGlashan.

The pattern of the half was dictated by the numerical difference between the two sides - and the Robins nearly leveled things up on the hour mark when Adebayo was thwarted by Davies from point blank range.

Seconds later, parity was restored. Patient build up play from the Reds resulted in the ball falling to Marc Richards, who made no mistake in side-footing the ball into the bottom corner from the centre of the box.

Tranmere looked determined not to fall behind though and Norwood forced Vigouroux into a sprawling save with 20 left on the clock.

Despite this, The Reds continued to probe the Tranmere defence, and took a deserved lead two minutes later.

More slick forward play proved too much for the Rovers back line, and Joe Romanski capitalised, poking the ball into the net despite pressure from veteran defender Stephen McNulty.

Town continued to create chances as the visitors tired, but in the end Romanski’s goal proved enough to seal a second win of the season at the energy Check County Ground.
