Reds Get Off To Winning Start In Pre-Season

4 July 2018

Swindon Town opened their 2018/19 pre-season campaign with a routine 3-1 victory away at Cirencester Town earlier this evening.

In an exercise that was designed to get minutes into the players, two trialists did their case no harm at all with a goal each whilst Keshi Anderson also got his name on the scoresheet.

Town opted to field two different Starting XI's in either half with five trialists taking to the field to start the game.

Lawrence Vigouroux - fresh from his loan spell at Waterford - took his place between the sticks whilst new signing Jermaine McGlashan also got a run-out.

There was an early chance for the Reds as a trialist sent a looping header onto the roof of the net from a corner, before the hosts went close with an ambitious effort although it was always rising.

Town should have taken the lead with 25-minutes on the clock as a Matty Taylor free-kick was knocked back into the path of Chris Robertson, but the centre-back couldn't keep his volley down.

Another opportunity soon followed as Scott Twine played in McGlashan with a lovely ball but the winger's shot was smothered by the Cirencester keeper.

But Town's pressure finally paid off ten-minutes before half-time as a lovely move resulted in one of the trialists producing a neat finish into the back of the net.

And it was 2-0 just before the interval as another neat move allowed one of our other trialists to burst clean through on goal before beating the keeper with a composed effort.

It was a completely different team that took to the field after the break, with the likes of James Dunne, Keshi Anderson and latest arrival Steven Alzate all getting some game time.

And it was Anderson who made an instant impact as he swept home from close-range following a beautiful and free-flowing Town move.

The trio of Anderson, Alzate and Ellis Iandolo were all attacking with a real menace and they nearly added another goal to their tally after Anderson curled a shot inches wide.

Alzate then forced two good stops from the home goalkeeper before Dunne hammered a thunderous effort just over the bar.

The pressure only continued as Town kept on launching wave after wave of attack on the home goal, but they were unable to extend their lead with a trialist rattling the post.

Instead, it was Cirencester who bagged the final goal of the game after Aidan Bennett burst clean through on goal before keeping his composure to beat a trialist keeper.

Town's next pre-season game is at Melksham Town this Saturday (11:30am Kick-Off).
