9 October 2018

Kaiyne Woolery marked his return from injury with a goal as Swindon saw off Plymouth Argyle in the Checkatrade Trophy.

Woolery, who has been out with a knee injury since April, came off the bench and struck with ten minutes to play to kill off Argyle.

Marc Richards opened the scoring for the Robins, before Keshi Anderson poked home the second just before half-time.

First Half

It wasn’t Town who started the quicker of the two sides – Joel Grant was slipped in behind and Luke Woolfenden had to be on his toes to get back in time to block.

Swindon’s first chance came from an unlikely source – Joe Romanski, playing on the left side of a back three, won the ball back high and drove into the box. His right-footed effort flashed just past the near post.

Ruben Lameiras was getting on the ball well for the home side and he found Alex Fletcher on his right foot – Luke McCormick was equal to his fierce effort.

After this, Town began to assert their dominance in the game and on 16 minutes were rewarded for five minutes of very good possession – McCourt found himself out wide, whipped an inch-perfect cross into Marc Richards who flicked home, past Kyle Letheren.

Scott Twine almost made it two, two minutes later. He spun on a sixpence and shot with his left-foot but it was just wide of Letheren’s goal.

Twine was nearly on the scoresheet again eight minutes later – Iandolo did well down the left and chipped a cross in from the byline. The striker couldn’t extend his neck to get over the ball and his header went over.

Town weren’t clear yet, despite their dominance – Lameiras was slid in-behind but with acres of time and space couldn’t find the back of the net.

And the Argyle midfielder was made to rue that miss a minute later – Martin Smith won two 70/30 tackles in which he seemed second best. Anderson picked up the ball, drove into the penalty area and toe-poked calmly past the Plymouth goalkeeper.

Second Half

Swindon continued into the latter 45 – two minutes into the half and Town almost increased their lead. Iandolo crossed after Anderson found him, and Twine backheeled at the near post, just over the bar.

Knoyle was next to try – the wing-back, more advanced in the 3-5-2 formation, found space and drove low across the goal but Letheren was equal to it, diving low with a strong hand.

Anderson and Iandolo were at it again on the hour mark – the left wing-back found Keshi running who curled into the near post where Twine had found space all evening. The striker connected well with the ball on the half-volley but leant back too much and the ball kissed the top of the crossbar on the way into the stand.

Two minutes later, Twine’s strike partner was subbed and on came Kaiyne Woolery, for his first game since April.

And it didn’t take him long to strike – with ten minutes to play, the striker cut inside on his left foot and blasted home down the middle of the goal but it was past Letheren before he could react.

The night ended with Town still unaware of their Checkatrade Trophy fate despite playing all their games.
