PDC - Tonight Was Perfect

21 December 2012

PAOLO Di Canio spoke to the media after his side's 5-0 win over Tranmere on Festive Friday.

On the result…
It was clear that we would win. I thought we would win but maybe not as we did. The result sends a big message to everybody. You cannot win 5-0 every time but was tonight was perfect. We must keep going otherwise it means nothing. We haven’t achieved anything yet and that is our challenge.

On the players…
We did a lot of work in the two week break and you could see the difference. The players were good and they were intelligent in the build up to the game and they looked angry and nasty tonight to prove me wrong. I must thank them for a very professional attitude. Tonight we did a fantastic job. We have now made 39 points.

On the penalty…
I understand things in England. It is almost a tradition to be on two goals and let that player take the penalty. Chris Martin gave Andy Williams the chance to score his hat-trick, but I wanted Chris Martin to score it. He won the penalty and should have scored. Andy was happy anyway and had scored twice, but Chris is a striker and one goal today would maybe have given him a different mentality.

On competition for places…
Tonight I must also thank the players who haven’t played many minutes because they have worked so hard. They have had to fight for their places in a genuine way and that anger has been shown in training in the right way. The players that haven’t been involved have been fantastic. They will be back at the Liddington tomorrow to train and it will be hard, but their attitude has been amazing.
