Preview - Aston Villa

30 October 2012

TOWN welcome Premier League side Aston Villa to The County Ground this evening as they face off against top-flight opposition for the second time in this season's Capital One Cup.

THE VIEW

Manager Paolo Di Canio has warned his players to expect a tough match against their Premier League opponents tonight.

“Aston Villa have a lot of quality and we know we cannot concede chances to them,” he said.

“They have players who can damage us and Paul Lambert will have his side well prepared to win the game.

“Paul is an effective manager and with the players he has I think he is playing the right football to get results. Tonight is a big match for them but I am sure the main target for them is the Premier League.”

To read more from the Town boss, don’t forget to pick up a copy of COYR, the official matchday programme. Priced at just £3, the award-winning publication is available from sellers in and around the ground.

THE STORY SO FAR

Villa have only won once in the league this season, a 2-0 win over Swansea City at Villa Park. Despite a further five defeats and three draws, Paul Lambert’s men have enjoyed success in the Capital One Cup. A 3-0 defeat of Tranmere in round one was followed up by a 4-2 extra time success at the City of Manchester Stadium, knocking out English champions Manchester City.

LAST TIME OUT

The Villains last visited SN1 in 1993 during Swindon’s only season in the Premier League. Paul Bodin’s penalty gave Town the lead only for goals from Shaun Teale and Dalian Atkinson to send Villa back to the Midlands with all three points. Swindon’s only home victory over Villa came in 1973. A David Moss goal was the only difference between the two sides.
