Di Canio - We Were Rubbish

2 September 2012

AFTER watching his side go down 4-1 at Preston North End, manager Paolo Di Canio spoke to the waiting media....

On the defeat…

In some way we made the worst performance without dignity, commitment and desire. This is the manager’s fault because I know the players. After a performance like we put in at Stoke, maybe I should have changed five or six players. If we make another great display then the game after we will change the team. That is my fault. I have to be straight, like I am normally, but unfortunately my feeling yesterday was that I didn’t believe the players would be mature enough in terms of their performance.

On the scoreline…

I am glad in some ways that we lost 4-1 and not 3-2 because we didn’t play well at all. At half-time I told the players that you can burn everything in an instant and Stoke is now forgotten. Now the players must focus and work hard, focus the attention and concentrate on the details. We must put the heart and the passion completely into the game. We must remember what we did today.

On the goalkeeping situation…

The goalkeeper is not different to the others because he has a different shirt on. Wes didn’t perform well against Stoke but the others put in a fantastic performance. He made a mistake for the goal today and he should have cleared the ball. Today he behaved as a bad professional and he must come out and say sorry to the fans. Leigh Bedwell did very well when he came on.

On facing Oxford…

We will change the side a lot for Oxford and some of our players are not strong enough to play eight, nine or ten games in a row at the level we need. We have done very well until now but now we must pay something. The likes of Simon Ferry will play their part against Oxford. The new signings have to understand and interpret what we need.
