Report: Doncaster 1-0 Town

1 April 2013

Doncaster - 1 (McCombe '80)

Town - 0

A goal ten minutes from time condemned Town to a 1-0 defeat at fellow promotion rivals Doncaster Rovers.

Jamie McCombe’s towering header proved to be the difference between the sides in a game of few clear-cut opportunities.

Kevin MacDonald made three changes to the starting line-up, two of which were enforced. Nathan Thompson and Andy Williams missed out through injury and were replaced by Nathan Byrne and James Collins respectively. Adam Rooney came into the side in place of Gary Roberts who dropped to the bench alongside youth team scholar, Mark Francis.

The first half was a scrappy affair with a poor pitch contributing to the lack of clear-cut opportunities in front of goal.

Aden Flint was involved early on blocking a shot from David Cotterill before Dean Parrett fired over. As the game descended into a tough-tackling midfield battle, it was not until the 35th minute when Alan McCormack raced onto a weak backpass and rifled over the angle of bar and post.

At the other end, Town had Darren Ward to thank for stopping a certain goal. McCormack was robbed on the right by Cotterill. The winger’s low cross evaded Foderingham and struck the trailing leg of Flint who was racing back to cover. As the ball bobbled towards the empty net, Ward adjusted his body and hacked clear off the line.

The start of the second period saw the hosts begin to test Foderingham. Firstly he kept out Kyle Bennett’s drive before reacting brilliantly to turn away Chris Brown’s goal-bound header.

David Cotterill was the next to try his hand at beating the Town stopper. His free-kick from range was arrowing towards the top corner but Foderingham managed to push it two-handed over the bar and to safety.

With ten minutes to play, the hosts’ pressure eventually told and they took the lead. A deep corner came all the way across to Jamie McCombe who climbed highest and planted a header into the ground that looped over the defenders on the line and nestled in the far corner.
