TOWN make their first trip to the Ricoh Arena this weekend to face Coventry City. The last time the two sides met away from The County Ground was 19 years ago when both sides were in the Premier League.
On 3rd January 1994, Town went into their top-flight fixture at Highfield Road off the back of a 3-1 home defeat to Chelsea on New Year’s Day and faced a Sky Blues side that were hovering in mid-table after a win at White Hart Lane two days before.
The match was also shown live on television after the original fixture due to be shown on Sky Sports was postponed resulting in a last-minute switch to Town’s match.
With just over fifteen minutes of the game to play, former Swindon striker Roy Wegerle burst through from midfield and blasted the ball into the top corner beyond Nicky Hammond to give the home side the lead.
Despite the transmission being lost minutes before the end, Town snatched a point thanks to a 90th minute equaliser. A ball from left to right picked out Martin Ling on the right. The midfielder swung a cross in towards the lurking Andy Mutch who ghosted in between the two centre-halves and directed the ball home on the volley, notching his third goal in as many matches in the process.
Although the result saw Town still rooted to the bottom of the table, they would beat the Sky Blues in the return fixture at SN1 just over a month later.
