Report: Town 0-1 Bury

Bury - 1 (Schumacher '21)

TOWN slumped to a 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Bury.

A first-half strike from the Bury captain sealed an away win for the Shakers.

Town were forced into one change in the heart of midfield. Simon Ferry missed out through injury and was replaced by Alan Navarro who stepped up from the substitutes bench to take his place alongside interim manager Tommy Miller.

On a chilly night at SN1, the game began at a leisurely pace with neither side able to gain the upper hand. The visitors fired a warning shot across Swindon’s bow after 18 minutes when David Worrall fizzed a shot wide of Wes Foderingham’s goal.

Town failed to heed the warning and just three minutes later, the Shakers were in front. A ball in from the left picked out skipper Steven Schumacher who made no mistake, steering the ball beyond Foderingham from no more than eight yards.

For the remainder of the half, Town battled away to try and find a way back into the match but found themselves frustrated by the visitors time and again. With five minutes to go before the break, Aden Flint rose highest at a corner but could only head Miller’s delivery over the crossbar and into the empty Excalibur Stand.

The second half followed a similar pattern: James Collins blazed over from a good position inside the box. As time ticked away, Town’s frustration appeared to build.

As Swindon continued to press, substitute Luke Rooney blasted a 35-yard free kick straight at Carson in the Bury goal. The chance appeared to wake Town from their slumber and Carson was on hand again to deny a red shirt from point-blank range with a header.

Another Town substitute Adam Rooney also went close. A high ball sat up for him nicely on the edge of the area and the Irishman launched into an overhead kick that was gathered by the goalkeeper at the second attempt.

At the death, Luke Rooney stabbed into the side netting after robbing the goalkeeper on the left edge of the area.
