Report: Town 0-3 Birmingham

17 July 2013

TOWN were beaten 3-0 by Birmingham City at The County Ground.

Mark Cooper made seven changes to the side that had drawn against Tottenham Hotspur 24 hours earlier. There were starts for Mark Francis, Yasser Kasim, Paul Benson and Luke Rooney.

It was the visitors who had the better of the first forty-five and Town stopper Leigh Bedwell was called into action twice to deny them.

It was Koby Arther who had the first effort goalwards minutes beforehand however but he could only fire his effort over the crossbar and into the empty Town End.

Chris Burke was beginning to make more of an impact for the Blues as the half went on and it was his good work that created the opening goal. Having stung the palms of Bedwell earlier in the half, his trickery on the right enabled him to fire a low cross into the six yard box where the ball was touched into the net by the waiting Lee Novak.

Despite the deficit, Town began the second period on the front foot. Half time substitute Andy Williams forced Randolph into a good save before Luke Rooney did likewise.

After a bright opening however, it was the visitors who added to their lead just short of the hour mark. A slick passing move cut Town apart at the back and ended with Novak adding his second of the night, tapping into an empty net.

Buoyed by their advantage, Blues went in search of a third. Wade Elliot lashed over when well placed before Koby Arther skewed wide of an empty goal after Bedwell had come for a ball and beaten to it.

Before the end, they did add a third goal when Andrew Shinnie fired home from just inside the box.
